I wonder?… Should I become a church member?
As Christians we believe in God and we try to behave more like Jesus every day. Coming to worship services, and to other church activities, and being part of the church family encourages us, and helps us to be become better disciples of Jesus.
As a Christian, you could live your whole life this way, so
Why do practising Christians then take the further step and become a member of the United Reformed Church (URC)?
- By becoming a member of the church, you are making a deeper demonstration of your belief in God.
- It’s a visible expression of your belief in God.
- It says, “I believe”.
- It brings with it a deeper sense of belonging.
- It brings a deeper sense of commitment to the church family.
- It says clearly, “I am part of this”.
Becoming a church member also enables you to play a greater role in the decisions we make as a church family. Church Meeting is when we come together to seek to hear what God is saying to our church and encouraging us to do. We express and listen to views on current topics, share ideas, and pray for God’s guidance. Church Meetings which usually take place monthly are open to all to attend, but only church members may vote on important decisions.
There is a copy of the promises you make as a church member for you to read now and a booklet about membership in the United Reformed Church called “Join the family”. Talk about them to other church members or with a minister.
If you decide to become a church member you will then discuss it with a minister. The whole church will be invited to vote in support of you becoming a member. A Sunday Service date will be agreed when you become a member. It is a short, uncomplicated dedication that is very meaningful and joyful. It is led by the minister. You will make promises of faith in one God, to worship, and to the fellowship of the Church. The whole congregation will promise their friendship to you in the Lord and give you their support in prayers and service.
If you have any questions, or would like more information, or to discuss becoming a member, just ask a church member, or a minister, or contact Mark on 07949 296 738, markp.broadwayurc@outlook.com
We’d love to hear from you.
